Essential Equipment
- Most of the equipment used to make preserves may already be found in your kitchen but there are a few essential items which you will need for particular preserving processes. Below is a full list of the equipment required including specialist items.

- Long handle wooden, metal or silicone spoon: Long handles are essential for keeping your hands safe whilst working with very hot liquids.
- Scales: Required for measuring the ingredients for your recipes
- Range of knives: Knives in a variety of sizes are useful for cutting different fruits and vegetables
- Chopping board: Not just useful to cut on but also to stand hot jars on whilst you fill them.
- Mixing bowls: To hold your prepared ingredients
- Kilner Jam pan: The encapsulated base of the Kilner jam pan will ensure you get even heat distribution for cooking, whilst its wide sides will allow for rapid boiling when required. With an 8 Litre capacity you can use it to make large quantities of preserves. The pan is suitable on all hob types including induction and is dishwasher safe.
- Kilner easy fill funnel: The wide neck and mouth of this Kilner funnel have been designed to fit into most jars allowing you to fill jars quickly and easily without any spillage and waste.
- Kilner straining funnel: This funnel has dual uses. Perfect to sieve pips etc out of your produce or remove the strainer and use it as a funnel to fill smaller necked jars.
- Ladle: An invaluable piece of equipment when filling jars.
- Kilner jam jar tongs: With heat resistant arms the Kilner jar tongs will allow you to grip and remove hot sterilised jars from boiling water whilst keeping your fingers safe.
- Non metallic spatula: Used for removing air bubbles from filled jars.
- Thermometer: Useful for preserves which need to reach a required setting point temperature.
- Kilner muslin cloth: Good for making bouquet garni bags and for straining jellies. The Kilner muslin cloth is washable so can also be used for wiping the rims and threads of filled jars before processing.
- Jar Labels: It is essential to label your jars with the contents and the date made as it may be many months before you come to eat it.
- Kilner Preserve jars: Glass jars with a replaceable vacuum seal lid and screw band. Available in a range of sizes.
- Kilner Clip tops jars: Glass jars with clip top lid with replaceable rubber seal. Available in a range of sizes.
- Spare Kilner vacuum seal lids and Kilner rubber seals: Available in packs of 12 for the vacuum seal and packs of 6 for the rubber seals.
- Pectin or Jam sugar: Essential ingredients for preserving
- Saucers or plates: These need to be placed in the fridge before you start making your recipe so that they are chilled in time for when you are ready to test the setting point when making jams, jellies or marmalades.
- Vinegar and Salt: Essential ingredients for preserving.
